Welcome to Uptown Bill’s!
Community. Conversation. Abilities Awareness.
Uptown Bill’s is a coffee house, performance venue, and a community meeting place. We offer great organic coffee roasted by Cafe del Sol and more than 20 varieties of tea (including several from Peet’s). We also have the best selection of soda pop in Iowa City. How about a sandwich? We have several on our menu. Or an ice cream sundae or shake? We serve those over the old Pearson’s ice cream counter. Uptown Bill’s hosts a variety of entertainment each week. About Bill Sackter
Uptown Bill’s is named after Bill Sackter, a mentally challenged man, who had been forced to spend nearly a half century as an “inmate” in an institution. He ended up as one of the most well loved and respected members of the community in Iowa City, where he spent the last eight years of his life. Two award winning movies were made about his life: “Bill” (1981) and “Bill on His Own” (1983).
